Juvenile Justice 

For your paper, you will have the opportunity to reflect on how you might change the U.S. juvenile justice system.You should address the following topics:

`1.Lay out what you see as the major issues with the juvenile justice system.This could be current practices and/or historical issues seen throughout the system over time.Further, explain why you believe these are the most pressing issues.

2.Make an argument for whether you think we need to simply reform our large, prison-like facilities, courts, schools, probation system, etc.or to completely restructure our system to look very differently.In addition, be clear about why you think this choice will result in more meaningful change than other approaches.

3.Make specific recommendations for how you would either change or remake the existing system.Consider that we spend $5.6 billion to incarcerate youth and $6 billion to put youth in foster care.Would you spend that money in a different way?Would you make new nation-wide policies?Would you fundamentally change the way in which “detainment” looks or would you eliminate it all together?Would your reforms just take place in youth facilities or would they include community and school-based reforms/interventions?Would they involve programs that intervened before youth got into trouble or any that helped youth transition back to society if they had to be detained?

4.Finally, you should argue why you believe that your recommendations will improve outcomes for youth and communities served by the juvenile justice system.

Your paper should be between 7-10 pages and should include evidence (statistics, first-hand accounts, quotes) to support your arguments you make.You should also be attentive to give credit to programs if you borrow from their ideas in question #3.
