During the period of 1605, a new form of literature was originated to develop the distribution
of information. The historic term referred to that literature was “Relation aller furnemmen
und gendenckwudigen Historien” (or Account of all distinguished and commendable news).
This work is widely considered, by many newspaper agencies as well as authors, as the
world’s first newspaper (Weaver & Willnat, 2016). The need to distribute and receive
information to each another has been a feature of human nature since the early decades.
Although, the ways in which humans distribute and receive information has changed
dramatically. Traditionally, information was distributed and received through verbal
communication, yet as technology has advanced, the means of information has progressed
simultaneously (Crowley & Heyer, 2011). What was once a verbal communication of
opinions, now it is converted into a monetary industry, named ‘journalism’. Even, the
dynamic nature of technology or computer technology have caused great changes to field of
journalism. An illustration of this is the rise of internet, particularly social media such as
various blogs, Facebook, Google, Twitter, and YouTube (Crockem, 2016). However, this
paper will argue that the internet including social media advantages more individuals rather
than journalism while also producing problems. Therefore, this paper will first, explain how
internet has affected and created problems to journalism. Secondly, it will illustrate how
internet has affected and created issues to news media. Lastly, this paper will provide a
conclusion regarding the subject matter.
The internet and social media have significantly changed the nature of journalism, causing
severe disadvantages to journalists while benefiting individuals. The traditional form of
information distribution has always been through newspaper, meaning that there was some
amount of delay between the time an incident occurred and the time the information was
offered to individuals or consumers. Of particular example supporting this could be that,
before the operation of televisions, most individuals received information or news through
newspaper (Crowley & Heyer, 2011). This indicate the amount of time provided for
journalists to write, print and present news. On the contrary, with introduction of social
media, consumers can now receive news (as soon as journalists publish) on their
smartphones, iPads, or devices. Whilst, it benefits consumers, arguable it further
disadvantages the traditional right of journalists.
Indeed, internet does indirectly benefits the field of journalism by providing a ground for
journalists to cover an event, incident, or story (The Guardian, 2017). For example, the
current (or perhaps ‘millennial’) generation is primarily depended or attached to the internet.
This means that they usually write and upload about matters, events, or incidents that
concerns their interest. This is further evident by a report claimed that 84 per cent of
Australians access the internet daily and likely to upload something (Sensis Social Media
Report, 2017). While, internet on the one hand, allows for a more minority voices such as
widening knowledge, breaking geographic and cultural barriers, and enabling choices for
information rather than just mainstream media. On the other hand, it potentially creates
negative influences on journalism. An illustration of this could be that internet equally
provides grassroots of non-professional journalists, where they may publish ‘fake-news’
which may potentially lead to defamatory or civil lawsuits (The Conversation, 2017). This is
further evident when Russia was accused of interfering into United States 2016 federal
election, and the sexual allegations against Donald Trump (ABC, 2017). This was when the
rise of ‘fake-news’ came into effect. However, the internet including social media is a
platform available for all individuals irrespective of the degree of harm causing to journalism
The continual growth of internet including social blogs has largely impacted the operation of
news media agencies. As the internet has gained popularity, its impact on the news media is
significantly high. In present time, consumers and readers are obtaining their information
form a range of sources (such as Google News, The Australian, New Matilda), and
disregarding the use newspapers. As this favours the individual consumers, it is fair to say
that the internet including blogs have widely declined public trust for journalism. Higgerson
(2015) argued that journalists just simply reporting is no longer satisfying to need of
audience. Audience today, expect that they have a choice in selecting what information they
prefer to read. Most importantly, they believe that they should have an effective role in
contributing to the content and voicing their opinions. Another issue impacting the field of
news media is the rise of shared information and the ongoing decrease of public internet to
reading. Greenslade (2016) argued that more and more individuals are turning to community
shared information, and see this as a ‘trusted’ way of distributing and receiving information.
This shared information is further evident by a research conducted in 2013, claimed that 72
per cent of adults received most of their news from family and friends; while 15 per cent
received from social media (Cision, 2014).
Although, note that this potentially could be due to the fact that news media today impacts
what people read and how they read or listen to news. Of particular example to this could be
the two-sided Australian government or politics. Most of news media in Australia either
support Liberal Party of Australia (LPA) or Australian Labor Party (ALP), therefore those
news media supporting LPA is against the ALP (The Conversation, 2017). This means that if
one (e.g. Sky News) publishes something against each another may involve politics and may
not be entirely accurate which may mislead individuals or audience. Consequently, this form
of media controlling what people read and hear has produced a lot of misrepresentation. Yet
this may also disadvantage new media regarding funding from the government. For example,
both governments may restrict funding on whichever news media that contradicts their
agenda. This is further evident when Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party accused the ABC
for being ‘too-left’, and threatened to cut funding by $600 million over four years (Herald
Sun, 2017). However, the increase in growth of internet including blogs and the war between
two major political parties have indeed caused harm and created problems for news media.
The period of 1605, established the first traditional form of distribution of literature or
information. Although, distributing and receiving information has a long history with human
nature. Indeed, a traditional form of distributing and receiving information was recorded in
early centuries, when humans only communicated verbally, contrary to today’s lifestyle
(Crowley & Heyer, 2011). Information is now converted and delivered by a monetary
industry, called journalism. However, the rise of internet including giant social media blogs,
and technology have largely changed and caused problems to the field of journalism and
news media. Writing and reporting was once primarily done by journalists, yet now done by
every non-professional through social media such Facebook, Google, Twitter, and YouTube
(Crockem, 2016). Throughout this paper, it is shown that the current generation favours the
use of social media in obtaining information rather than news media, especially newspaper.
This has largely produced issues for news media by shifting themselves more to social media
while pay less attention to their traditional agenda. However, the decrease of public interest
towards journalism including news media has also been outlined throughout. Whether this is
to blame the two-major Australian political parties, current generation, rise of ‘fake-news’ or
its failure to keep up with rapidly changing environment and human behaviour, is widely
unknown. Nonetheless, journalism including news media is greatly affected by internet
considering the issues addressed throughout.
