The Brighter Side of Dark Tourism

Have you ever been to, or thought of visiting, war museums or memorials? Would you

consider participating in a tour of the famous catacombs in Rome while in Europe? Or go to see

the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero when in New York? If your answer to these questions is yes,

than you are, or could be described as a dark tourist. Dark tourism is defined as the travel to sites

that are in some way connected to death or disaster. The travel to and experience of events

associated with death, pain or suffering is not a new phenomenon. This particular form of

tourism dates back to the support of the Roman gladiatorial games, with death and tragedy at its

core. Dark tourism is described as morbid and disrespectful because of the way some visitors act

at these sights and the marketing tactics of may of the locations as an attraction rather than a

commemoration site or a place of loss. But with all the negativity surrounding the ugly side of

dark tourism, there is a positive outlook on this topic as well. With that being said, in visiting

places with historical value and memorializing the deaths that occurred allows many visitors to

feel a sense of closure for lost loved ones or homes, and also makes history real while allowing

for visitors to connect with the past.

Many places that are considered to be a place of dark tourism are places where many

lives were lost in a devastating manner. In this sense they are relatively ÔdarkÕ places to tour in

that they are historical sites where deaths occurred. On the other hand, they are also places that

commemorate the lives lost and that are there not only for the dead and to have their lives

celebrated and remembered, but they are there for the families of the ones who were lost. Places

such as the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero in New York, and the Tower of London, are places

where family members can go to find closure in their lost ones death and to remember their lives.

In the article Dystopia, Death, and the Growing Popularity of Dark Tourism, Author Tina

Amirtha says, ÒTourists may feel patriotism or fascination with a disaster site, while friends and

families of victims who are still processing their trauma come to these sites to mourn and to

confront other difficult emotions.Ó Amirtha then follows up with a quote from the president of

the Families of Flight 93 from the New York Times that reads, ÒI didnÕt find peace when I first

came, back in 2001É..Now, when I come back to the memorial, IÕm much more at peace. Not to

say that the emotions arenÕt raw. Not to say that I still donÕt harbor anger.Ó This example of how

a memorial made in honor of the people who were lost allowed a family member to find a sense

of peace in the fact that his loved one had passed. Memorials such as these are places were many

lives were lost and tragedy lingers, but they are much more than that to the families who first

handedly experienced the agony and heartbreak of these tragedies.

The historical reality of dark tourism sights is another major appeal to many visitors. It is

one thing to learn about history and hear about the devastation that occurred at these sights, but it

is a completely different feeling to be in that place and experience for ones self the suffering and

the story behind the location. In his article, Is Dark Tourism Okay?, Robert Reid tells his story of

what he remembered most about the time he spent in Warsaw’s WWII-era Jewish ghetto. He

recalls this moment and says, ÒÉa fellow visitor, a white-haired man who, when I noticed the

number tattooed on his arm, acknowledged my silent inquiry with a nod. The experience made

history more real for me.Ó Reid explains how in visiting this sight he was able to acquire more of

a reality of what happened to the people involved in World War II. ReidÕs experience is certainly

not the first and will not be the last of its kind, many people express that in visiting sights of dark

tourism they feel that they are able to connect more with history and the people who were

affected by it.

The other side of this situation is that dark tourism acquired its name because of

insensitivity of these locations and the history behind them. An example of the this is shown in

article Is Dark Tourism Okay, author Robert Reid writes, Ò Tourists posting photos of

themselves giving the thumbs up in Auschwitz, for example, or smiling from a rusted-out

bumper car in Pripyat, the Ukrainian city that was evacuated after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear

meltdown.Ó This is just one case of many where people have disrespected a dark tourism site

instead of appreciating the history and pain at this site. It is people like this who should not be

allowed to determine whether a site can be viewed by others who appreciate and respect its

history.

In conclusion, dark tourism is not a act of disrespect but rather it is the visiting and

commemoration of the locations visited. Dark tourism gets a bad wrap in our generation because

of social media and the lack of respect for history. Many people such as I, are able to see the

peace and value in these sites.
