  • Flexner’s Influence on Social Work: Then and Now

Abraham Flexner delivered a critical speech in 1915, which brought up the question of whether social work can be a profession. He argued that there was not a unique, scientific body of knowledge and independence that social work was characterised by, and that these were, in his view, essential requisites of a profession. Although his claim was controversial and criticised, it also brought significant changes and professionalisation in the area. Today, it is possible to look back on the impact of Flexner that transformed social work and analyse what has been achieved since then, as well as what challenges and opportunities remain open to this day, particularly in the light of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Professionalisation After Flexner’s Critique

The statement by Flexner forced the social work community to think and think anew about itself, its mission and methodology with a criticality (Social Welfare History Project, 2024). The profession responded to this by beginning to develop more solid research, an ethical and academic base. Standardised academic programs were developed and established, and the route into the field became more structured. There was licensing and credentialing that followed, which provided legitimacy and social confidence. Ironically, Flexner, in declaring social work to be not a profession, preconditioned its eventual development as a profession.

  • Balancing Individual Care and Social Reform

This view of Flexner also exposed one of the oldest tensions in the social work field – the tension between the individualistic and systemic approaches. Whereas Flexner faced towards the direction of clinical, individual-oriented work, today’s social work acknowledges the inseparability of personal well-being and social context. Nowadays, social workers blend the micro-level assistance and the macro-level advocacy, knowing that one or the other cannot be disregarded in the process of creating sustainable changes (Finn & Molloy, 2020).

  • The Role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Even though Flexner never referred specifically to DEI, these values are so important in the current social work environment. Cultural competence, the challenge of systemic injustices and inclusivity are increasingly touted as requirements of practitioners. The DEI has become an aspect in every aspect of the interaction with clients, policy development, etc. A social justice professional should ensure that services are available, fair and responsive to the communities that they serve.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

There is a lot that has to be done despite the progress. The profession has to:

· Keep on incorporating the anti-oppressive practices in each of the service domains.

· Address inequalities in mental health and in access to social support services.

· Recruitment of a diverse workforce representing and serving the marginalised communities.

· Improve the interprofessional collaboration and client involvement in the care planning.

It is these changes that are necessary in order to not only professionalise social work but to make it fair and inclusive.

Conclusion: Evolving with Purpose

The Flexner critique ended up creating the revolution of the social work profession. It is a structured, ethical and evidence-based discipline today. Nevertheless, we should not lose the critical eye that Flexner opened. With the further development of social work, its future is dependent on its ability to integrate clinical excellence with community empowerment, all the time promoting equity, justice, and inclusion.
