I have completed 100 practicum hours in a 30-bed Medical-Surgical Unit in a local hospital as a part of an MSN program. These hours did provide me with a chance to apply that which I have learned in the actual clinical context, specifically, and those branches, namely, which are the staff well-being, staff-centered care, and leadership. Along with my preceptor, I assessed the work context, tried to help nurses and understand more about the issues these professionals must address in their work, like burnout, staffing shortages, and acute patients.
It is one of the significant projects I was working on and helped the team to shift off the traditional shift handoff and to bedside shift reporting. The PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) approach was used to do this and assist in educating staff and creating visual tools to perceive the change more conveniently. My team also gathered the information about the professional experience of the staff and recorded the effects that the environment has on their well-being. The experiences helped to strengthen my leadership skills, communication, and problem-solving skills.
This practicum has helped me to comprehend the importance of nurses being put forward just as much as the patients. I have learned a lot about the idea of teamwork, flexibility, and change leadership. These 100 hours have prepared me with whatever preparation I need to take a capstone course and it has also made me believe more in my ability to make a positive impact in the nursing profession.
