Many political observers argue that debates are not a useful measure of a presidential candidate’s political worth because a candidate could be terrible at the debate format, yet still be a great president. Do students agree or disagree with this opinion? Can someone be a great president but be a terrible orator? Or is such a skill vital to the presidential office?
1-(I somewhat agree that a presidential candidate can not be the greatest at the debate format, yet still be a good president. I believe it is essential to be able to speak well in front others and communicate thoughts effectively. There may be some instances where the candidate makes a mistake, but overall I believe public speaking is crucial for a president. They have a duty to address the people, answer questions, and communicate successfully. However, if someone did not do the greatest during a debate that does not necessarily mean they would be a “bad” president. But being a good orator definitely helps because it is such an essential part of their job.)
2.(In my opinion, a presidential candidate could be terrible at the debate format but, if elected, would prove to be a good president. However, I think it’s unlikely that a terrible orator would be elected. Since the public often looks to the debates to form their opinions of candidates, someone who performs poorly in the debates would be at a disadvantage. Also, I do think that being a good orator is definitely a good skill for a president to have. Regardless of whether it is an essential skill for a president, though, it is a way that the public is able to evaluate the presidential candidates and is therefore an important skill to have in order to even get elected.)
