Advocating for a Global Perspective in Nursing Practice

As a nurse leader, promoting the integration of a global outlook into the local practice involves a number of actions:

Education and Awareness: Be a proponent of the global health program and be on the front line to create awareness of tobacco-related diseases among other health workers and fellow nurses (Abbasinia et al., 2020). This entails the release of data on the burden of diseases and mortality caused by tobacco all over the world and the best practices of nations such as Canada.

Policy Advocacy: Local and national campaigns on the policy to be stricter on tobacco control to be taken by policymakers (Abbasinia et al., 2020). This may involve writing letters, speaking at the open forums, and collaborating with agencies like the American Lung Association and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Community Outreach: Implement the health promotion programs and campaigns to inform the community about the dangers of smoking and the ways to quit (Abbasinia et al., 2020). Hold educational campaigns in schools, business organizations, and other centers in the area to spread awareness about the threat.

Collaboration with Public Health Entities: Work with departments of local health and shape them into actual providers of tobacco control programs (Milstead and Short, 2019). One of the examples, a nurse manager working in a community health care organization, might introduce a smoking cessation initiative that conforms to the requirements stipulated in the guidelines of Canada, such as plain packaging and graphic health warnings. They can also promote high taxes on cigarettes and tobacco and do away with smoking in social facilities. The nurse leader can adopt the same approach by advising their community to implement similar strategies by providing them with the information on the effectiveness of such measures in this plan, so that they experience reduced rates of smoking and healthier outcomes.
