1. What is Orwell’s argument in this essay?-Orwell’s argument in the essay “ Shooting an Elephant” is how imperialism destroys everybody involved. would be to drive a bayonet into a Buddhist priest’s guts”. He finished off by saying that his

thoughts are all normal byproducts of imperialism. When Orwell arrives at the location where

the elephant is seen peacefully eating grass he thinks to himself that he doesn’t want to kill

the elephant because it was never his intention to. However because of the imperialistic

empire he works for he states that “ A white man mustn’t be frightened in front of “natives”;

and so, in general, he’s not frightened” he suddenly feels that he has to prove his

sovereignty to the Burmese or else he’ll get humiliated. This shows how imperialism is

putting pressure on Orwell to live up to the image of the “powerful white man” and therefore

causes him to shoot the elephant. The uses that are most effective towards Orwell’s

argument are his character, his value, and his reason because they break down and give us

a better idea of how he thinks imperialism is evil. The uses that are less effective are heart

and facts because they don’t give us much about the argument he’s trying to make about

imperialism.

– The section of the essay I found engaging is when Orwell kills the elephant because
