The specialization and practicum courses on a master’s level enhance both clinical knowledge and leadership as well as aspects of evidence-based practice that are critical in shaping professional identity. These experiences help to cultivate the ability to provide person-centered care, collaborate in interdisciplinary teams, and facilitate delivery of healthcare delivery improvement. Practicum experiences enable to develop critical thinking and decision making skills, and learn to apply theoretical knowledge in class to practice. My future career development objectives are to assume more advanced practice roles, serve in the nursing education/leadership field of healthcare, build and influence policy, support the education of upcoming nurses, and spearhead quality improvement initiatives. Following the focus on additional certifications and participation in research grants will be a continuous development of the profession to help advance nursing as a profession and enhance the outcomes of the care provided to patients.

Culturally competent care, promotion of health equity, and inclusion of inclusivity among practices within healthcare facilities are some of the ways to ensure that nurses apply diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The cultural awareness and sensitivity do not only enhance patient-provider relationships and provide care that is tailored to various communities; it also demonstrates the dissimilarity of care required to community health. An example of a patient-centered care experience that applies the DEI principles was helping a patient who did not speak English to deal with diabetes. In order to maintain good communication, a medical interpreter was needed to negotiate about possible treatment options, dietary restrictions, and lifestyle changes. Literacy and language level of the patient were altered by modifying educational resources so that shared decision-making would be possible. Regarding cultural beliefs, the idea of shared decision-making was accented, and the patient was empowered to select a management plan, which would best fit in the values and daily life. This was done by including the family to encourage compliance. The patient was allowed to manage his or her health better in a fair, inclusive and efficient healthcare delivery system.

Diversity policies, including hiring, treatment of all staff members fairly, and culturally competent care, show the desire by an institution to be just. The value of inclusive implicit bias training is that it offers the opportunity to interrupt the societal norm of permitting discriminatory treatment to take place without consequences or action and thus promotes active bystander intervention.
