1. As a Master’s level nursing student, reflect on how your specialization and practicum courses have influenced your Professional Identity, and what your goals for future career development are.

The specialization and practicum courses on a master’s level enhance both clinical knowledge and leadership as well as aspects of evidence-based practice that are critical in shaping professional identity. These experiences help to cultivate the ability to provide person-centered care, collaborate in interdisciplinary teams, and facilitate delivery of healthcare delivery improvement. Practicum experiences enable to develop critical thinking and decision making skills, and learn to apply theoretical knowledge in class to practice. My future career development objectives are to assume more advanced practice roles, serve in the nursing education/leadership field of healthcare, build and influence policy, support the education of upcoming nurses, and spearhead quality improvement initiatives. Following the focus on additional certifications and participation in research grants will be a continuous development of the profession to help advance nursing as a profession and enhance the outcomes of the care provided to patients.

2. How can nurses integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion as core components of their professional identity?

Culturally competent care, promotion of health equity, and inclusion of inclusivity among practices within healthcare facilities are some of the ways to ensure that nurses apply diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The cultural awareness and sensitivity do not only enhance patient-provider relationships and provide care that is tailored to various communities; it also demonstrates the dissimilarity of care required to community health. Addressing the disparities in healthcare through patient advocacy, policy involvement, and education bring about improved access to high quality care by the underserved groups. Inter-field training and collaboration in DEI will lead to an inclusive environment, which will result in an inclusive profession, as it will support other viewpoints within groups. The implementation of the DEI principles into practice means that the issue of biases is directly tackled, patient care is improved, and a setting in healthcare where diversity are embraced and valued is created.

3. Think about a patient-centered care experience where you applied diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. How did you empower patients to make their own health decisions during that experience?

An example of a patient-centered care experience that applies the DEI principles was helping a patient who did not speak English to deal with diabetes. In order to maintain good communication, a medical interpreter was needed to negotiate about possible treatment options, dietary restrictions, and lifestyle changes. Literacy and language level of the patient were altered by modifying educational resources so that shared decision-making would be possible. Regarding cultural beliefs, the idea of shared decision-making was accented, and the patient was empowered to select a management plan, which would best fit in the values and daily life. This was done by including the family to encourage compliance. The patient was allowed to manage his or her health better in a fair, inclusive and efficient healthcare delivery system.

4. How can you inspire colleagues to uphold racial and social justice efforts and serve as professional role models in addressing implicit bias at work?

Among the elements that inspire colleagues to continue working towards racial and social justice are designing inclusive workplace atmosphere by educating, advocating, and holding accountable. Imitating behaviors, talking frankly about implicit bias and promoting DEI training programs generate awareness and self-reflection. Diversity policies, including hiring, treatment of all staff members fairly, and culturally competent care, show the desire by an institution to be just. The value of inclusive implicit bias training is that it offers the opportunity to interrupt the societal norm of permitting discriminatory treatment to take place without consequences or action and thus promotes active bystander intervention. One of the best ways to encourage the development and inclusivity of the healthcare sphere is to create mentorship programs among minorities. More so, interdisciplinary collaboration and the use of evidence based practice can improve equity in healthcare delivery by encouraging patient-focused, non-judgmental care. Ethical leadership and inclusiveness are the values that enable nurses to initiate significant change and call colleagues to action and involvement in the area of racial and social justice.

Improving patient outcomes by utilizing telehealth, nursing burnout, and culturally competent care are some of the typical MSN capstone project areas. The opportunities, which have been noted by specialization courses, include the integration of technology, the optimization of workflow, and improving health equity.  The augmented telehealth alternatives offer a chance to improve the access and the continuity of care, particularly to the underserved groups. Burnout in nursing is a persistent issue, and the answer to it is to develop solutions to improve the well-being, job satisfaction, and retention.
